How the Estimate Works

Road-trip fuel cost comes down to three numbers:

Fuel used = Distance ÷ Fuel economy Total cost = Fuel used × Price Per person = Total cost ÷ Travelers

The calculator normalizes US and UK mpg, km/L and L/100km, plus per-gallon and per-liter pricing, so you can mix whatever your dashboard and the pump show.

The estimate is only as good as the distance you feed it. Measure the real driving route — including detours and the return leg — with the route planner or driving distance tool before you calculate.

Tips for a Cheaper Trip

  • Know your real economy. Highway cruising beats the city figure; check yours with the gas mileage calculator.
  • Fill up off the highway, where fuel is usually cheaper.
  • Split evenly and settle up with the per-person figure above.

For a single-driver estimate without splitting, use the fuel cost calculator.
