Driving Distance Calculator
Calculate driving distance between any locations with Distance Map. Plan road trips, calculate distances between cities, and estimate fuel costs for long journeys.
How to Calculate Driving Distance
- Pick your starting point — search or tap on the map
- Add your destination — and any intermediate stops
- Get the driving distance — calculated along real roads
Distance Map follows real roads and highways, so the distance reflects what you’ll actually drive, not the straight-line distance.
Plan Multi-Stop Road Trips
Adding multiple stops is easy. Drop a pin at each destination along your route, and Distance Map calculates:
- Total trip distance — sum of all segments
- Distance between each stop — see exactly how far each leg is
- Estimated drive time — based on typical road speeds
This makes Distance Map perfect for planning road trips, delivery routes, and multi-stop business travel.
Common Driving Distance Calculations
City to City
Calculate the driving distance between two cities for trip planning. Compare with flying time and cost to decide the best transport option.
Address to Address
Get exact driving distance between specific addresses. Useful for delivery cost estimates, contractor quotes, and real estate decisions.
Round Trip Distance
Add a return leg to calculate the full round trip distance for fuel cost and time planning.
Border Crossings
Plan international trips by adding stops at border crossings to see exact distances on each side.
Driving Distance vs. Straight-Line Distance
Driving distance is almost always longer than straight-line distance because:
- Roads follow terrain, not straight lines
- You have to follow existing road networks
- Detours around obstacles (lakes, mountains, restricted areas)
- One-way streets and traffic restrictions add to the route
For example, the straight-line distance from London to Edinburgh is about 535 km, but the driving distance is about 660 km.
Estimating Fuel Cost
Once you know the driving distance, you can estimate fuel cost:
Fuel cost = (distance ÷ fuel economy) × fuel price
For example, a 500 km trip in a car that gets 15 km/L (about 35 mpg) at $1.50/L fuel:
- 500 ÷ 15 = 33.3 litres
- 33.3 × $1.50 = $50 in fuel
