Speed, Distance and Time on the Bike
Cycling speed is just distance over time, rearranged for whatever you’re missing:
Speed = Distance ÷ Time Distance = Speed × Time Time = Distance ÷ Speed
Use it to plan a route’s duration, check your average after a ride, or work out how far you’ll get in the time you have.
Typical Cycling Speeds
- Casual / commuting: 15–20 km/h (9–12 mph)
- Fitness rider: 20–28 km/h (12–17 mph)
- Fast road cyclist: 28–35 km/h (17–22 mph)
- Racing / pro peloton: 40 km/h+ (25 mph+)
Wind, gradient and road surface all move these figures — a headwind or a climb can cut your speed dramatically.
Plan the Whole Ride
Map your route and get its exact distance with the cycling route planner, estimate the effort with the cycling power calculator, and check the climbs with the grade calculator.
