Cycling & Running Route Planner

Distance Map is a free cycling and running route planner for training rides, commutes and long-distance events. Measure any route on the map, see the elevation profile, and save your favourites.

How to Plan a Route

  1. Open Distance Map
  2. Drop pins along the roads, bike paths or trails you want to ride or run
  3. See total distance update as you go
  4. Check the elevation profile to see the climbing
  5. Save and export as GPX for your bike computer or running watch

Drop as many pins as you need — Distance Map handles complex multi-leg routes with no limit.

For Cycling

Road cycling — Plan training rides on real roads with accurate distance and elevation. Road bike routes benefit from avoiding gravel sections that can sneak onto automatic router suggestions.

Gravel and mountain biking — Satellite and street views let you trace trails that standard routers don’t know about. Combine with the GPX viewer to import community tracks.

Commuting — Find the shortest or safest cycling route between home and work. Compare alternatives to see which is fastest or flattest.

Sportives and races — Preview the course. Know how many kilometers to the next feed station, when the big climbs hit, and where you’ll be tiring.

For Running

Daily runs — Measure loops from your door. Save favourites so you can vary distance without re-planning each time.

Marathon and half-marathon training — Build up distances accurately. A 32 km long run needs to actually be 32 km — eyeballing from Google Maps leaves you short or long.

Trail running — Use satellite view to trace trails that road-focused routers miss. The elevation profile is essential on hills.

Track and interval training — Measure custom loops precisely for repeat intervals.

Elevation: The Hidden Variable

Two 50 km rides can feel completely different based on climbing. Distance Map shows:

  • Total elevation gain across the route
  • Per-segment climbing between waypoints
  • Gradient of each section
  • Highest point of the ride

For cyclists, a rough guide is that every 100 m of ascent adds the effort of roughly 10 km of flat riding.

Export to Your Device

Every route can be exported as GPX, which works with:

  • Garmin Edge bike computers
  • Wahoo Elemnt bike computers
  • Hammerhead Karoo
  • Garmin Forerunner and other GPS running watches
  • Apple Watch via third-party apps
  • Strava route import
  • Komoot

Share Your Routes
