How It Works
The calculator uses the standard sunrise equation — computing the Sun’s position from the date and your latitude and longitude, then solving for the moments its centre crosses the horizon (including the usual −0.833° allowance for atmospheric refraction and the Sun’s radius). Times are converted to your device’s local time zone.
Why Daylight Matters Outdoors
- Hikers — work back from sunset to set a safe turnaround time.
- Photographers — sunrise and sunset frame the golden hour.
- Sailors and cyclists — know when you’ll need lights.
Near the poles in summer and winter the Sun may not rise or set at all — the calculator flags midnight sun and polar night.
Plan Around the Light
Pair your daylight window with a measured route: check how long a trail will take with the hiking time calculator, and map the route itself with the hiking distance calculator. Need coordinates? Convert them with the coordinates converter.
