How Steps Become Calories
There’s no single “calories per step” — it depends on your weight, stride and how fast you move. This calculator estimates the distance from your step count and stride, then applies the MET (Metabolic Equivalent) method used by exercise scientists:
Calories = METs × weight (kg) × time (hours)
Walking is about 3.5 METs, a brisk walk around 4.3, and easy running roughly 8.3. Heavier people and faster paces burn more.
A Rough Rule of Thumb
For a typical adult, 1,000 steps burns roughly 40–50 calories, so the popular 10,000-step goal is around 400–500 calories. Your personal number shown above is more accurate because it uses your own weight and stride.
Why These Are Estimates
Calorie burn also depends on hills, fitness, temperature and efficiency — no formula nails it exactly. Treat the figure as a consistent guide for comparing days, not a precise measurement.
