The Three Formulas
Speed, distance and time are linked by one relationship, rearranged three ways:
Speed = Distance ÷ Time Distance = Speed × Time Time = Distance ÷ Speed
A memory aid is the “DST triangle”: cover the value you want, and the other two show you whether to multiply or divide.
Watch Your Units
The most common mistake is mixing units — dividing miles by minutes gives you miles per minute, not mph. This calculator normalizes everything for you, but if you do it by hand, convert first:
- km/h → m/s: divide by 3.6
- mph → km/h: multiply by 1.609
- minutes → hours: divide by 60
Measure the Distance First
Solving for time or speed needs an accurate distance. Measure the real route on a map with the distance calculator, or work out the straight-line distance with the distance between coordinates tool. For a whole trip, the average speed calculator handles stops and varying pace.
