Running Cadence Calculator
Work out your running cadence in steps per minute (SPM) from your speed and stride length — or find the stride you’d need to hit a target cadence at a given pace.

What Cadence Is
Cadence is how many steps you take per minute while running, counting both feet. It’s a key running-form metric because, together with stride length, it determines your speed:
Speed = Cadence × Stride length
At the same pace, a higher cadence means shorter, quicker steps; a lower cadence means longer, bouncier ones.
The “180” Guideline
Elite distance runners often land around 170–190 steps per minute, and 180 spm is a common target. It’s a guideline, not a rule — optimal cadence rises with speed and varies with height and leg length. Raising a very low cadence by 5–10% can reduce overstriding and impact.
How to Count Your Cadence
Count the steps on one foot for 30 seconds and multiply by 4, or let a watch or foot pod measure it. Then use this calculator to see the stride length that produces your pace.
