What Map Scale Means
A map scale like 1:50,000 means one unit on the map equals 50,000 of the same units on the ground — so 1 cm on the map is 50,000 cm (500 m) in reality. The relationship is simply:
Real distance = Map distance × Scale Map distance = Real distance ÷ Scale
The units cancel, so the scale ratio works the same whether you measure in centimeters or inches.

A larger scale (smaller ratio number, like 1:25,000) shows more detail over less ground; a smaller scale (1:250,000) covers a wider area with less detail.
